Boston For the Weekend

Weekend getaways have become some of my favorite trips, and taking advantage of how easy it is for us to pick up and go has certainly been part of our lifestyle for this first year of marriage. We just got back from an extended weekend in Boston and I want to go back already.

During middle school, Zac lived in a suburb outside the city so it was fun to hear his memories from his childhood while we wandered around. I spent some time in Cambridge for a conference last year, but neither of us had spent time in downtown Boston in the past decade.

We packed our weekend full of plenty of adventures—many of which were reccomendations from our hotel, whose website points out a lot of great attractions around Boston.

We landed around 11:30 pm and then waited for nearly 20 minutes for an Uber that never came. In fact, while waiting for it to show up we downloaded the app and got a Lyft. Definitely became a big Lyft fan.

Our hotel, The Element, was in the seaport district. When we checked in they had Swell water bottles in the room for us, a full kitchen, and a heavenly bed that made it a bit difficult to get up in the morning.

We started our Saturday off with breakfast at the hotel. It wasn’t your typical complimentary breakfast. They had a parfait bar, fresh juice, a specialty chef, and fancy french toast with a tootsie roll that my husband especially enjoyed.

After breakfast we headed to the Charles River to kayak a bit. It provided a peaceful, refreshing unique view of the skyline on a hot day.

Then we raced down toward Fenway Park to see my first Major League Baseball game ever! Fenway is amazing, even if you don’t love baseball. I am positive I will be a baseball mom in the future so it’s good that I’m already starting to gain a passion for the game (my husband will love that statement). Seriously though, the crowd at Fenway is so engaging. The stadium is historic. The oldest in America. I thought it was so cool how we were sitting on original seats from 100+ years ago when the park was built. It was also special to see my husband so excited to be somewhere.

Zac was pointing out different areas of the stadium, telling me memories of games he came to in Jr. High, acted like the normal hotdog “Fenway Frank” we got was the best thing since sliced bread, and sang Sweet Caroline at the top of our lungs!IMG_2658

Then we swung by Quincy market and Faneuil hall. It’s easy to move from area to area on the T (subway). The Holocaust memorial was nearby. We actually stumbled upon it unplanned, and it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the whole trip.

That night we headed back down to the seaport district near our hotel to eat Yankee Lobster (if you want to skip the line grab take-out you don’t have to order ahead and there are plenty of parks around to eat at). We spent the evening playing ping-pong, corn hole, and on some awesome light up swings at The Lawn on D—which was just across from The Element Hotel.IMG_1536

Day two we woke up to a windy rainy morning. Then we went up to the public gardens, and Newbury Street (which has the coolest Adidas store I’ve ever seen). With no small persuasion from Zac, we headed back down to Fenway to see if we could snag some tickets for another game. We were both excited to get a good deal. We paid 160 for our tickets the first day and 100 for slightly better tickets the second. If you don’t mind missing the first inning or taking a little risk on not getting tickets, I would recommend doing what we did the second game.

Then we went back to the hotel and warmed up while we watched Fever Pitch (really a Boston classic) and took advantage of the kitchen in our room!

We finished the night at Boston Calling, a three-day music festival. Eminem was the headliner so we caught his performance and Khalid. Eminem is one of my all-time favorite singers, so I was so excited when I found out he was playing that weekend!

Snapseed 2Our final morning was spent biking to Castle Island, a fortress that was built back in 1634. The Element has bikes for hotel guests to use so we took the opportunity to take them for a long spin! But if you don’t stay there Boston has city bikes you can “check-in” and “check-out” from several locations. Even though we got lost (several times) biking through the city was a good way to see even more areas! IMG_2823

We finished the trip by meeting up with some of Zac’s friends who took us to an Italian street for lunch and then toured the freedom trail with us.

Everyday was packed full of fun, I still feel like there is so much left to see. I love Boston.

A huge thank you to Boston’s Element Hotel for hosting us for a fantastic weekend. I hope to find myself at another location very soon.
